Nerja has  the most spectacular coastal scenery of the region of Axarquia . At the eastern end of the town , the foothills of the Sierra de Almijara burst into the sea forming cliffs of Maro -Cerro Gordo. The natural area contains a series of virgin coves . The rest of the coast front is dotted with dark sand beaches and crystalline waters. Caletilla beach and Calahonda beach stretch at the foot of the Balcon de Europa , a viewpoint with stunning views of the Mediterranean . The Church of El Salvador, the hermitage of Sorrows and the Aqueduct of the Eagle are three of the jewels of the historical heritage of this destination. Although its tourist attraction par excellence is the Cueva de Nerja.

 

Nerja has 16 kilometers of coastline divided into fourteen beaches. The Burriana , Playazo , Torrecilla and Calahonda are the best known and are equipped with all amenities . The municipality also has several coves of great beauty.

The Balcon de Europa is located at the end of a palm-lined avenue. The viewpoint is set around a circular plaza that seems to float over the sea. It was created in its place Nerja Lower Castle was destroyed in the War of Independence. Several guns evoke the military past of the enclave.
